Lanka’s garment industry at pricing disadvantage in EU - Daya Gamage

Sri Lanka’s garment industry has been having a pricing disadvantage in the European Union since the loss of the GSP Plus facility from the EU, said chairman of Daya Group Daya Gamage yesterday..

The industry has never had to weather more perilous times, he told the opening of a garment factory by Daya Apparel at Ninthavur, by US ambassador Patricia A. Butenis.

Dr. Mrs. Anoma Gamage, Mission Director of USAID James Bedner and USAID Programme Specialist W.M. Bandula S. Nissanka were among the large gathering present on the occasion.

“The United States has not yet extended the trade benefits offered to Tsunami-affected countries and I hope Sri Lanka will soon regain the USD 147mn tax concessions brought about through this scheme,” said Mr. Gamage.

Daya Apparel continues to meet the challenges head on, although over 600 factories had been closed down and tens of thousands of people had lost their jobs in recent times, he said.

Under the Eastern Garment Alliance, with the aid of USAID, the Ninthavur, Tihrukkovil and Mahaoya factories will jointly generate 20 machine lines and introduce over 1,000 job opportunities, according to him.

“What is interesting about this programme is that the Ninthavur factory will provide jobs to Muslims, the Tihurukkovil factory for Tamils and the Mahaoya factory for Sinhalese,” he said.

Mr. Gamage went onto say that the US takes the initiative in aiding countries faced with difficult situations.

“.. I experienced this first hand when the Digamadulla District was affected by the Tsunami in 2004, at which time USAID implemented a comprehensive Tsunami recovery programme worth over USD 135 Mn. targeting all of the worst hit districts,” he said.

Hoping to work even more closely with USAID in the future in order to accelerate economic development of the North and the East, he said the two provinces had the country’s true resources, her human capital, remained untapped.
