Hold elections for North first, and then for East - Daya Gamage

Dissolving the Eastern Provincial Council prematurely is a denial of the people’s democratic rights, since they have given the PC a five year mandate, says opposition leader of the EPC and UNP national organizer Daya Gamage.

The government, taking hold of all the powers through the 18th amendment to the constitution, is preparing to dissolve the EPC to hold early elections and commit vote rigging, he charged.

Giving an interview to ‘Digatha News’, he said a main objective of introducing the provincial councils system was to solve the Northern issue.

However, the North was yet to have a proper provincial council, said Mr. Gamage.

The LLRC recommendations, which also propose solutions to the North issue, have not been implemented, he noted.

Therefore, he said he would not oppose if the LLRC recommendations are put into practice to ensure people’s democratic rights, elections held for the north first and then for the east.

When questioned about the UNP’s readiness to face elections in the EPC, he said the people of the province have now clearly understood the fraudulent nature of the government and are with the UNP.

They know that only the UNP can solve their problems, Mr. Gamage said, adding that the party was prepared to face elections for the EPC at any time.
